Behind The Drop with Daniel McCann

In our Beyond The Drop Q&A series, we bring you brief interviews with some of the minds driving innovation at Aquatrols.  We speak to a wide variety of folks who work here at Aquatrols, exploring topics from research, to conservation, to business.

Today we are featuring an interview with Daniel McCann, who joined the Aquatrols team as a Territory Manager a few years ago. From his expert knowledge of the Redox brand to his extensive experience as a golf course superintendent, Daniel discusses his transition to the Aquatrols team and how his passion for the industry all began.

What was your first position within the golf industry?

My love for the golf industry didn’t begin until college.  I decided to change my major to Turf Management and worked on my first golf course as a summer intern at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.  It was one of the greatest summers of my life!  I was definitely hooked on this business after that summer.  From there I worked on some other courses including another internship at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island before graduating and accepting my first Assistant Superintendent position at Bonita Bay Club in Naples, FL.

What drew you to pursue a sales career within the industry?

After working in the golf industry for 20+ years, I recognized that very few superintendents retire while being superintendents, which is very sad.  So when I was presented an opportunity to join the team at Redox, I felt it was the right time in my life to make a career change.  I have no regrets and am blessed to work with some outstanding people who have been a tremendous help to me so far!

How has your prior experience helped you in your current position?

My prior experience as a superintendent has helped me immensely when talking with customers because I have been in their shoes.  I can help superintendents find solutions to various problems at their course from a different perspective than most. I want to be a resource for superintendents, not just a salesman.

What excited you most about joining the Aquatrols team?

Like I said before, I’ve been in this business for 20+ years and Aquatrols has been the go-to for water management products for as long as I can remember.  I am excited to be a part of a team with such deep roots in the turf industry as well as where the future of the company is headed in regards to their environmental and conservation initiatives.

We could not be more excited to have you on our team as an experienced turf professional and Redox product expert.  With Redox turf products now exclusively available through Aquatrols, how can customers enhance their programs even more beyond our wetting agent and active ingredient lines?

This is one of the things I love most about these two companies collaborating, their products work so well together!  At the end of the day, we are growing plants and asking those plants to thrive in conditions with poor soils, poor water quality, low mowing heights, traffic, shade, extreme temperatures, as well as insect and disease pressure to name a few.  Water management is key but so is nutrition management.  Redox products are manufactured in a way that makes those nutrients 100% available to the plant so you get the most out of every dollar spent.  And as the saying goes, “where your water goes, so go your inputs.”  The combination of Aquatrols and Redox products working together gives your turf what it needs to survive the rigors of today’s intense management of turfgrass.

Lastly, what can you be found doing when you’re not working?

I love to spend as much time with my family as I can since I am on the road a lot during the week.  Other than that, I really enjoy playing golf.
