Beyond The Drop with Paul Lowe

In our Beyond The Drop Q&A series, we bring you brief interviews with some of the minds driving growth and innovation at Aquatrols.  We speak to a wide variety of folks who work here, exploring topics from research, conservation and business to field sales and back office.

Today we are featuring an interview with Paul Lowe, our Northern Account Manager. Paul has racked up a solid 30 years in the industry having been a greenkeeper for 20 years and has now been with Aquatrols for 4 years. Paul’s experience and practical approach coupled with his friendly style means he the go-to man for technical advice in our northern territory.

What was your first role within the turf industry and what was it that inspired you to take a job in this arena?

I entered the turf world in 1989 as an apprentice greenkeeper (old YTS) at Eastham Lodge in the Wirral. I liked golf, the outdoors and I simply had an opportunity to join the greenkeeping team at my local golf club.  After a few months of hard graft I was hooked.  I’ve been in the industry for 30 years now, I keep learning every day and have just as much passion for this unique industry today as I did on my first day in the job.

How have your previous jobs helped you in your current role as an Aquatrols Account Manager?

During my time as a greenkeeper, I managed two very different golf courses and I understand the many pressures of greenkeeping; agronomic pressures and golf club politics. I then joined the sales world for a company who specialises in soil biology and soil health and this gave me a deeper understanding of the complex world of soil – knowledge that I need every day in my role as an Account Manager for Aquatrols.

What was it that attracted you to become part of the Aquatrols team and what is it about your job that you most enjoy?

As a greenkeeper I was always a user and a fan of Farmura and Aquatrols products. The reputation, history and quality of the products have stood the test of time and the very best golf clubs and greenkeepers continue to use the products. With new technology, research and the innovative attitude towards the future of turf, and whilst keeping its traditional values, joining Aquatrols was a massive opportunity I couldn’t resist.

I enjoy meeting greenkeepers, talking greenkeeping and helping solve issues that I know can be very stressful to greenkeepers.

What is the biggest challenge to the customer in your area? What’s the main problem that you help them to solve?

Consistency; it’s become a buzz word but it’s so important in the unpredictable world of turf. The main focus for me is getting the soil moisture consistent. When the air : water ratio is correct and consistent, all the nutrients, lotions and potions will be applied consistently, the playing surface and grass composition will be more consistent and the greenkeeper has more control.

What is the one thing about the Aquatrols brand and products that you always want new or potential customers to know?

The research and support, its so important to use tried and tested products that deliver what we say it does, and I like everyone to know that if any turf professional has an agronomic issue – moisture or nutrition – we have an amazing technical team to back up the customer and an array of quality product to fix their problem.

And finally, where can you be found when you’re not working?

With my kids, it’s so important for me to enjoy my family time. Kids grow up so fast!
