Beyond The Drop with Hamish Crichton

In our Beyond The Drop Q&A series, we bring you brief interviews with some of the minds driving growth and innovation at Aquatrols.  We speak to a wide variety of folks who work here, exploring topics from research, conservation and business to field sales and back office.

Today we are featuring an interview with Hamish Crichton, who joined us as an Account Manager in September 2018 looking after the Midlands territory. Hamish is new to the turf industry but brings with him a wealth of experience in Account Management and commercial operations as well as a keen interest in golf.

What was it that attracted you to become part of the Aquatrols team and what is it about your job that you most enjoy?

I am a huge fan of golf and the outdoors. So, when an opportunity to work in both came along I had to go for it.

My favourite part of the job is seeing the wealth of stunning golf courses across the country and meeting the green keeping teams that maintain and enhance these beautiful spaces.

You recently passed your FACTS exam on your first attempt – congratulations! What has been your biggest learning in your role so far?

Thanks, it was an experience! My biggest learning so far is that soil and all that lives down there is a bit mind-blowing, and there is so much we are yet to understand and to discover.

How have your previous jobs helped you in your current role as an Aquatrols Account Manager?

My previous work centred around making sure the customers had all they needed in order to provide their end customers with great service and product knowledge. Open lines of communication are essential, as well as working hard to see where you can help develop your customers’ business or success.

What is the biggest challenge to the customer in your area? What’s the main problem that you help them to solve?

The same that most golf courses and sports turf venues across the country have; getting the right balance of moisture in the profile. If the course is suffering from dry patch, we have world leading products to combat a number of water management challenges.

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes in your position. What are some things that most customers don’t realise you can help them with or do for them?

We all work as a team and I am fortunate to work with colleagues who have been in the industry for decades. You would be hard-pressed to find green keeping challenge that the Aquatrols team cannot help with or advise on – we all support each other from a sales and technical stand point.

What is the one thing about the Aquatrols brand and products that you always want new or potential customers to know?

Aquatrols is not as a jack of all trades but a master of one; water management. We contribute significant resources into Research & Development to ensure that we continue to produce leading edge products no matter the size of budget. We’re even developing our own research farm near our HQ in New Jersey – more on that soon!

And finally, where can you be found when you’re not working?

When time permits, you can find me on the golf course, asking myself why I bother, or watching Brighton & Hove Albion FC. The rest of the time is spent with my young family, which easily provides me with the most happiness.
